Dr. Amy Geotzinger

Amy Goetzinger, Ph.D. is licensed as a Psychologist and certified as a Health Services Provider by the North Carolina Psychology Board. She earned her doctorate in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and completed her psychology internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. She works part-time, predominantly on weekends, at Lewis Consulting Services providing counseling and psychological evaluation services to the community. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in the Department of Anesthesiology where she works with the Chronic Pain Service. 

Dr. Goetzinger provides psychotherapy and psychological assessment for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. She utilizes an active, skills-based, problem and solution-focused approach guided by theory, practice, and science. She provides evaluation and treatment services related to Pediatric Developmental Disabilities (including Autism and Asperger’s Disorder), ADHD, Learning Disorders, OCD, and Mood (including Depression and Bipolar Disorder) and Anxiety Disorders.

Dr. Goetzinger specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults having adjustment concerns and mental health issues related to chronic medical conditions, including cancer, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, liver disease, and chronic pain. Using a cognitive-behavioral framework that actively supports the mind-body connection, psychological counseling can serve as a platform to help individuals better manage stress, resolve relationship conflicts, address educational and occupational challenges, and/or learn more adaptive coping strategies. Additional therapeutic goals can include improving self-esteem, coping with chronic illness and pain, and make healthy lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, losing weight, and addressing addictive behaviors. Dr. Goetzinger is a member of the American Psychological Association, Society for Behavioral Medicine, Society of Biological Psychiatry, and International Association for the Study of Pain.
